Its origin is clearly Arab, although archaeological remains dating from prehistoric times have been found in its municipal area. Its name comes from Arabic: Gema-Al wacir, which means “the gardens of the vizier", in which the peculiar stepped urban structure is preserved, adapting to the steep terrain that has welcomed it since time immemorial.
A town that has tried to adapt to changing times and to the current era and has more than succeeded thanks to an initiative that began in 1994, meetings of artisans who created their pieces and placed them in different parts of the municipality, turning the streets in an open-air museum and also houses a contemporary art museum in its urban center… in the middle of the mountains in the middle of nature!! In addition to the above, they continue to create initiatives such as Arte Vivo, Lumen or individual projects “All of them have come with the intention of strengthening Genalguacil’s link with contemporary art, putting both a national and international focus on this destination in the province of Malaga. Art against depopulation. Art for the repopulation”.
