Faraján, comes from the Arabic and means pleasant place. It is an undoubtedly correct name since its geographical situation at the head of the Genal river gives it a singular charm. In a landscape of deep ravines furrowed by streams that flow into the Genal, the dominant note of the great masses of chestnut trees, the undoubted protagonists of this valley, stands out. Close to Júzcar and Alpandeire on the north side of the river and Igualeja and Pujerra on the other bank, it forms part of the mosaic of white villages that characterize this area.
The first news of the occupation of these lands belongs to the Arab-Andalusian period. It is known that various tribes of Berber origin such as the Magilas, Gumaras, Bahríres, Habibies and others, settled in this area creating various farmhouses in the current term of Faraján.
With a population of 302 inhabitants and an altitude of 641 m above sea level, it is a beautiful environment with such spectacular landscapes with the Balastar river ridges where you can take a short circular hiking route, suitable for almost all public and in which you can see a landscape of travertine terraces planted with orchards and waterfalls of spectacular beauty and genuine originality.
